Ares is one of the most popular programs in computers World, which has won an excellent reputation due to the service it offers. The utility main objective is to offer the user a way of sharing any file type with other people, as well as they will offer to this virtual “community” its own contents. In order to develop its tasks, the program use P2P interchange network, which has the advantage of not needing any type of “servers” or “clients”, but it is based on a series of interconnected “nodes” which links networks from all users.
[edit] Description
The good thing of this program is that users can have a high downloading speed, superior to that experience with other applications. This is due to its robustness, but also to the great number of people who use the program.
In that sense, the most people use Ares; the better would be for the application purposes, since file distribution is done bearing in mind the number of available sources for them. As each user is a possible source, as many users take part of it, it improves files availability, and as a result the downloading speed.
“Community” criteria is not only present at the moment of sharing a file, but also it can be created chat rooms so all users can chat about anything (of course, content is the theme that prevails in chat rooms).
Also, the program has compatibility with Bittorrent network, so you can use an environment to download “torrent” to you computer, and of course, share them with other users from the same network.
[edit] History
Ares is a utility created on mid 2002 with the idea of serving as a file interchange client through Gnutella network. However, a few months after its launch, developers decided to build its own network for users, although it is still being based on Gnutella.
Although it provides a great service, the utility had few users because the program was distributed together with an adware. Although it was optional, it did not give good advertisement to the program and it generated suspicion among people, so on later versions they decided to take it out in order to increase quality. This caused that throughout the months there were hundred of people that day by day join Ares, as a consequence being one of the most demanded programs.
Ares stands out because it is a program that does not have great changes from version to version, although improvements were made, such as the interface similar to Windows Vista, compatibility with Bittorrent protocol, and Gecko adoption as the browser engine.
For fear of an avalanche of demands claiming for copyrights, in 2005 Ares start offering a free software license, leaving the development to users community hands.
[edit] Features
- Ability to share files:
Ares has been designed as a platform through which millions of people all around the world can share files of any type. You can practically share any content type, since there are no limitations of formats because only data is transferred.
- No limitations:
Files that are shared through Ares can be of diverse types: movies, songs, photographs, computer programs, etc. At the same time, you can also pack a group of small files inside a ZIP or RAR folder (for example, images), and place them on hard drive directories where there are files designed to be shared.
- P2P:
P2P protocol (abbreviation of “peer-to-peer”) is a system of interchange which does not have a centralized server, which means that it simplifies direct connections among computers. Ares manages those connections freely, allowing the user to have access to the content that other people upload in order to share it, and vice versa.
- BitTorrent:
Additionally, Ares uses BitTorrent protocol which is little files with torrent extension. These files are static, so you can find them on Web pages. Its main purpose is to canalize a file download into smaller packs through previously specified nodes. As these packs are placed on the local computer, they can be shared with other people.
- High Speed:
Ares uses interchange networks that allows having a high downloading speed, since thousand of people can share the same file. Also, the same computer has one of the many sources that other people can use for getting files they want to have at their PCs.
- Multiple downloads.
The good thing of P2P protocol is that it does not need a direct downloading link, but there are many people that have the same file. This guarantees that files can be effectively downloaded, since although one of the sources are not connected to Internet, you can use its services using other paths.
- Specific Searches:
You should only write a few words on the searching box so Ares can find the exact content the user is looking for. In that way, precise downloads are achieved, which speed up tasks as you do not need to re-start one and again the same operation (in the case is not right).
- Content preview:
One of the improvements that Ares introduces is that it is not necessary to wait until a new download finishes verifying that its content is exactly what you want, since you should only double click on it to check it. This is not possible with all files, but with video an audio files, two files type of great size (which of course takes up much time initially than the smaller one).
- Shoutcast:
Shoutcast is a distribution system designed by Nullsoft enterprise which distributes audio contents. It uses MP3 and AAC formats, two audio extensions which offers high quality in a small size. Ares allows connecting directly to radio stations which broadcasts through Shoutcast, which avoids resorting to another additional application, saving computer resources and bandwidth.
- Comunity:
As it is a platform for sharing files, inevitably Ares becomes an involvement comminatory space, and a cultural resources source. This is so because each person put on their folders things that wish to share, such as record material, photographs, documents, videos, and any type of content you wish. Without any doubt, it can be a way of placing local contents in any part of the planet.
- Forums:
Ares users are not anonymous, but they have a user name and become part of the different forums. In order to have access to them, it is not necessary to make additional downloads nor enter a Web site, but you only need to use the program tool for that purpose, having access to them from the main interface.
