[edit] History
The communication system service through an instant messenger offered to IRC clients started in 1988; the intention was to create a protocol which enables to establish discussions of the Usenet kind. The initial project was based on similar programs that had already been created. To launch the first version of the software, developers worked hard during months, and on August of that year, they finally reached their goal. The first user registrations took place on that month. The first 10 registered users were able to exchange messages between them simultaneously and in real time. Moreover, it was possible to establish protocol relationships with servers created in Finland and eventually in Japan.
In its beginnings, the application did not offer additional features and its graphic interface was very improvised. The first option which was modified was the writing method. They developed an editor for the text commands which was developed in an independent way.
In the early 1990, IRC had gained certain popularity among the diverse users, so much so that by that year there were 12 different servers and the average registered users for each of them was of 38.
In 1991, there was a historical happening that unexpectedly boosted IRC towards a multiuser connection: the Gulf War which increased its presence in 135 servers.
Along the 90s, IRC became the most used application of its kind, but it was not until the beginnings of the new millennium that applications based on this protocol burst; and par excellence, the most successful one has been mIRC.
